Dr. Oni Blackstock
Health Justice’s Founder & Executive Director
Dr. Oni Blackstock is the founder and Executive Director of Health Justice, a consulting firm that empowers health-related organizations to prioritize anti-racism and equity while addressing health inequities in the communities they serve. A primary care and HIV physician and researcher, Dr. Blackstock, is globally recognized as a leading health equity changemaker, committed to transforming healthcare and public health.
Previously, she served as assistant commissioner for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she led the city’s innovative and widely praised efforts to end the HIV epidemic. Dr. Blackstock was also an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she provided clinical care and conducted innovative, community-centered NIH- and CDC-funded HIV clinical research.
Dr. Blackstock has played a pivotal role in developing and implementing racial and health equity initiatives in healthcare and public health. She oversaw the launch of the NYC Health Department’s first Bureau-based Racial Equity and Social Justice program, leading to improved data equity, enhanced health information systems, increased workforce equity, and fostered more equitable administrative and programmatic policies. Her commitment to advancing health equity is profoundly shaped by her own experiences at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.
Dr. Blackstock holds degrees from Harvard College, where she majored in Computer Science with a full scholarship from AT&T/Lucent Technologies, Harvard Medical School, and the Yale School of Medicine Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. She is also a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and the recipient of numerous accolades from media outlets, includnig Marie Claire, GO, Out, and Essence magazines, as well as from community-based organizations such as Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and Exponents. Dr. Blackstock has shared her insights on media platforms such as Democracy Now!, CNN, MSNBC, and Good Morning America.
